While the weather has turned unusually chilly in San Diego, cross-cultural events are heating up! Thankfully Covid cases continue to decline, but please remember we aren't completely out of the woods, and sensible precautions are still relevant to ensure everyone's continued good health.
Ongoing, local theatrical offerings include On Her Shoulders We Stand at Bread and Salt (ending on Sunday), Ad(mission)s at Onstage Playhouse (also wrapping up Sunday), El Borracho at the Old Globe, Trouble in Mind (also at the Old Globe), and Abigail's Party at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center. Next Thursday San Diego Rep's The Great Khan will open at the Lyceum.
The Oceanside International Film Festival concludes this weekend, still time to catch some flicks! San Diego Rep's 30th annual Kuumba Fest continues at the Lyceum until Sunday. Today (Friday), tomorrow, and Tuesday Gaslamp Quarter will host Mardi Gras Celebrations.
Tonight (Friday), the Irish band Irish quintet, Goitse will perform two shows (6:30 & 8:30) at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. The Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park will host a Celebration of New Writers of Color with readings followed by a discussion. At the Music Box, there will be a tribute concert to Mexican rock's Heroes del Silencio and Soda Estereo. Friday and Saturday House of Gucci will screen at Cinema Under the Stars.
Saturday, the San Diego Museum of Art will present a virtual lecture From Forts and Palaces: Paintings Made for the Rajputs. At the International Cottage's outdoor stage Island Mist + Dingeman Elementary B9ers will perform. Also at Balboa Park, the Worldbeat Cultural Center will host a BIPOC Community Circle. The Chinese Historical Society will host a virtual discussion of the acclaimed book The Red Bishop. The fabulous SAMAHAN Filipino American Performing Arts & Education Center will hold a free Workshop on Maguindanao Dances and Kulintang (Gong) Music at the Malcolm X Library. Noche de Cumbia at the Quartyard will feature Los Sleepwalkers, La Diabla, Cumbia Machin & Viejo Lowbo. There will be Black Art Matters Art Exhibition and Competition at the Worldbeat Center. The El Cajon Elks Lodge will host a Mardi Gras Celebration. Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger David Castañeda will perform at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad. The TYPA Theatre Company will present Expression of Black Joy and Unity at the Coronado Playhouse. Saturday and Sunday the Worldbeat Center will hold its annual Tribute to the Reggae Legends Festival.
Sunday, in addition to all the continuing events mentioned above, the Mexican Norteño band Los Cardenales de Nuevo León will perform at the Pala Events Center.
Monday there will be an online discussion of the film The Anabasis of May and Fusako Shigenobu. UCSD's School of Global Policy & Strategy will host an online talk entitled: From Manners to Rules: Regulating Smoking in Japan and Korea.
Tuesday, the Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore (which moved to Rosecrans St.) will hold a book signing with Lizz Huerta who will discuss and sign copies of her book The Lost Dreamer. Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations will perform at St. James by the Sea church in La Jolla.
Wednesday UCSD's Holocaust Living History Workshop will host a virtual talk on The Moral Triangle: Germans, Israelis, Palestinians. Warwick's will present an author talk with Zoe Disigny who will discuss her book The Art of Traveling Strangers.
Thursday the Timken Museum will present an online talk on Flemish Baroque artist Anthony van Dyck and paintings by the artist in the Timken collection.
Next Friday Keltik Karma with every-way awesome guitarist Fred Benedetti and violinist Chris Vitas will perform at Templar's Hall in Poway.
Next Friday and Saturday, Kenneth Branagh's semi-autobiographical film Belfast will be screened at Cinema Under the Stars.
Next Saturday UCSD's Center for Academic Research & Training in Antropogeny will host a virtual symposium on the topic of Human Origins & Humanity’s Future: Past, Present & Future of the
Anthropocene.
Next Sunday the House of India will hold its annual Lawn Program at the Balboa Park International Cottages.
